Training for Puppies
In the beginning, some puppies might need to potty every 1-2 hours. This might seem daunting but with a consistent routine and reward system it’s easy as:
Establish a designated potty area. This is best done by creating a border around the area that the pads cover. Get creative! Use a crate, water bowl, dog bed, or dog toys to mark the potty grounds.
Bring your pup to this area whenever they need to potty. Most commonly after drinking water, eating, walks, or playtime.
Celebrate their successes! When your pup uses their pads properly, be sure to shower them with praise. We’re talking words of affirmation, head scratches, and a fair amount of treats! And even if they miss, don’t scold them, just quietly clean it up and try again later.
As your puppy starts to adjust to their routine, remove pads from the potty area week after week until you’re down to one.
Training for dogs in their golden years
As dogs get older, they might need to adjust their routine to make life easier. Sometimes this means moving their daily potty breaks inside. Here’s how to transition them if inside-going is new.
Establish a designated potty area. This is best done by creating a border around the area that the pads cover. Get creative! Use a crate, water bowl, dog bed, or dog toys to mark the potty grounds.
Bring your dog to this new area whenever they typically have to potty. If your dog already has a potty routine, take them to the pads instead. Or after they eat or drink.
Celebrate their successes! If inside-going is new, this praise will reaffirm that this behavior is acceptable. Head scratches, and a fair amount of treats work really well!
